A SAHM Capsule Wardrobe: Fall/Winter 2020

2.png

I remember my very first capsule wardrobe: it was Spring 2016, and I was working my first big-girl corporate job. You couldn’t tell me I wasn’t cute with my closet being home to blush, white, black and tan blazers, frilly tops, skinny trousers, jeans, heels and handbags. Ah, to be 24/25 years old with a closet full of H&M, Forever21, Express, and Michael Kors again!

These days, I’ve traded the office for home with a toddler and infant, which means my wardrobe needs to fit the role. So that’s what this post is going to be about: the why and how to create a Fall/Winter stay-at-home-mom capsule wardrobe.

Like I said in my toddler capsule wardrobe post, a few things to keep in mind: A) I buy what I feel is needed in each season, and don’t stick to a specific number. But I do make sure to keep the amount of items as minimal as I can. B) I am five months postpartum, and we are very much still in the middle of a pandemic, so this list mostly comprise of comfy things to wear at home (which is so different for me!). C) I live in Atlanta, so fall comes late and winters are pretty mild here.

Why i Use a Sahm Capsule Wardrobe

I gave reasons why I do capsule wardrobes on this post, but here are a few additional reasons as to why a mom capsule wardrobe works for me (and can work for you, too):

Helps me get dressed quicker

I’ll be honest here: my boys love them some mama - which means they want me all day every day. This means I am rarely alone to do anything. So, Mama’s gotta be quick when it comes to getting myself ready. Since I’ve streamlined my clothes, I know exactly what’s in my closet and pick out an outfit in less than two minutes.

I Wear Everything

Like I said earlier, I am five months postpartum. Nothing is a bigger mood killer this season than trying to shimmy and Beyoncé booty jump into those size 4 skinny jeans and not getting past the thigh. So I skip that heartache with clothes I know I can fit and wear this season.

Less laundry

‘Nuff said.

How to Create a Fall/winter sahm Capsule Wardrobe

Prepare the Season Before

To make this easier on yourself, give yourself 3-4 weeks to prepare the season ahead to see what you need, as well as time to go shopping for these items, if need be.

Make a List

Think about what your days look like and what you may need. During this time of a pandemic, a lot of us are home. So you may need more comfy loungewear versus a nice top with all the bells and whistles (although, if that’s your thing, do you, boo!). Go through your clothes and make a list of the items that you need to buy that are missing from your closet.

Choose a Color Palette

Having a basic color scheme for your mom capsule wardrobe makes life so much easier! Everything doesn’t have to be all the same color, but having almost everything compliment each other makes it possible for more outfits and cuts down on decision time. Win!

What’s on my List

Like I’ve mentioned, I’m home a lot these days with a toddler and infant. The only places we go during the week are to the park or some fun, outdoor place I can take the kids, like a pumpkin patch or apple farm!

Your list and needs might look completely opposite of mine - you might need more or less than me - and that’s okay! The below is a loose guide:

Tops

  • 4 long sleeves

  • 4 t-shirts

  • 3 sweaters

  • 2 cardigans

  • 1 hoodie

  • 1 dress

Bottoms:

  • 1 pair of joggers (I haven’t had joggers since college, so I’m excited about this!)

  • 1 pair of light wash jeans

  • 3 pairs of leggings

Jackets and coats:

  • 1 jacket

  • 1 coat

Pajamas:

  • 2 nightgowns

  • 1 footie pajama

  • 1 robe

  • 1 pair of slippers

Socks:

  • 10-ish pairs

Shoes and accessories:

  • 1 pair of tennis shoes

  • 2 pairs of boots

  • 1 beanie

  • 2 scarves

A Note About Grace

If you’re thinking about creating a SAHM capsule wardrobe, don’t make this harder or more stressful than it needs to be. It shouldn’t be about a set number, but more about what you need, and what works for you and your home.
